MOVIES: Donald Duck and his days in The Army

it's Veterans Day today in the United States. It’s a day where we honor any veteran who have served in the military in our country. My dad, Charles Smith, and his father Charles Smith senior are both vets. My dad served in the Coast Guard for 25 years and my grandfather served and fought in the Korean War. Second to them, obviously, my favorite vet is Donald Duck; and in his honor and everyone else who has served here are some Disney animations featuring Donald Duck and his time served in the Army.

TELEVISION/VIDEOS, MOVIES/VIDEOS and COMICS: Of Ducks, Rabbits, Looney Tunes, The Justice League And Gods!

This is from me, and NOT some reprinted material. - OlderMusicGeek

My daughter and I were watching How I Met Your Mother. On this episode, they were explaining to Robin how someone's view of a person can change. Ted used a picture that can look like a duck one way and a rabbit another way.

Then they compared a bad boyfriend to a rabbit and a good one to a duck. Marshall, and rightfully so in my opinion, asked why the rabbit was considered worse than the duck. This started a huge argument among the group until Marshall gave in.

Well, of course, my daughter had to take the duck side, so we, ourselves had a long argument.

Of course, I talked about how cute and cuddly rabbits are, especially compared to ducks. And how much people would rather have a pet rabbit than a pet duck!

My daughter, though, brought up Donald Duck, and how there was no rabbit in Disney.

I, of course, brought up Bugs Bunny, and talked about how he was MUCH cooler than Donald Duck, and even cooler than Daffy Duck.

My daughter tried to say Daffy could kick Bugs' ass, but I and her text buddy set her straight on that point!

Then my daughter claimed, "Well, Bugs Bunny couldn't defeat Super Duck."

Surprised, I insisted, "Are you crazy?! Bugs Bunny could defeat Superman. Bugs could defeat the whole Justice League!"

"What do you think Bugs Bunny is a god?"

"Have you seen the Warner Brothers cartoons. They all have the powers of gods. They come back from explosions and falling from great heights! Roadrunner can even run into a picture painted on a rock wall!"

Then later, we were watching Arthur and I pointed out how Arthuyr's best friend is a rabbit. Plus, one of the bullies is a rabbit. "Where's the duck on Arthur?! There isn't one!"

My daughter just shook her head! I should have been on that episode of How I Met Your Mother!

MOVIES/VIDEOS and ART: A Charming Story Of A Scarecrow And Some Halloween Pumpkin Pictures

This is a little late, but I just came across these videos.

The first, I think, is the telling of a traditional tale involving a pumpkin-headed scarecrow. The other videos are just artwork with scarecrows and pumpkins. - OlderMusicGeek

MUSIC: Song Of The Day - Halloween Edition (Oct 17): "Country Death Song" By The Violent Femmes

I know that a good number of people claim that this - "Country Death Song" by The Violent Femmes - is a sick and creepy song. All I can say is - Yes, it IS a sick and creepy song. It's about a father killing his daughter! How can it not be creepy?

I think the problem is that Gordon Gano captured the mindset of a person who would kill his own daughter very well, and we begin to sympathize somewhat with this guy. And that's what's creepy. And that's what makes this a perfect Halloween song!

And this video is perfect for the song!

MOVIES/VIDEOS: A New Look At An 70s Animation Cult Classic

This is from me and NOT reprinted from somewhere else. - OlderMusicGeek

Well, I watched a movie I hadn't for 10 years and had only watched it that once in over 20 years.

Here's a couple of tweets I put up about it on my Twitter page...

showed my daughter a movie of my younger days - wizards - wikipedia.org/wiki/ Wizards_(film). she said it was weird but she wasnt impressed.

i have to admit i liked "wizards" better in my 20s in a theater at midnight with fellow fans than watching on tv in my 40s with my daughter.

I don't know if I'm becoming more cynical or just lost my youthful enthusiasm. But Wizards used to be one of my favorite films of all time. I saw it at least 5 times in my 20's.

And in the midwest, that was hard to do! They didn't show that often!

Unfortunately, that was before dvd's - or even before many people had vcr's! So the theater was the only place to see a lot of films.

And one of the ways to see interesting films was at a midnight movie. In the 1970's, theaters would show their more freaky and rock movies at midnight.

So I saw Wizards with other die-hard fans. It was a fun and exciting atmosphere. Similiar, but not nearly as intense, as Rocky Horror Picture Show showings. A few people actually did dress up. Others had buttons like "They Killed Fritz!"

But most people there had seen the film and had heard from word of mouth about the film - no internet then - it was either word of mouth or from magazines!

So maybe Wizards doesn't do as much for me because I'm more jaded. Maybe it's cus the atmosphere of watching it at home with a daughter who didn't think much of it can't be as fun as watching it in a dark theatre with fellow fans excited to see the movie.

Maybe because of the increase of independent films, Wizards just isn't as impressive.

I really don't know. I just know that although I still like it and find it a fascinating film, it doesn't grip me and hold me like it once did. It doesn't move my heart like it once did.

I just don't care for Avatar, Peace, Weehawk like I once did. And although I once watched the movie over 5 times in probably less than 5 years, it might be another 10 years before I see it again.

As a bonus feature - here's the stuff the reviewer from Badmovies.org learned from Wizards...

Never interrupt an elven funeral, especially if he's burying his horse-thing.
Somebody is going to kill Fritz.
The Nazi's were ruled by an evil sorcerer.
16mm film can last millions of years if stored correctly.
Demons and mutants love disco.
Religions must involve spanking and Coca-Cola.
Giant ticks are flammable.
Elves watch lots of Bruce Lee films.
Viagra will survive the apocalypse. (You explain some 6,000 year old man having a sex drive.)

TELEVISION/VIDEOS: Bender, A True Hero

This in from the In Character blog on NPR.org. - OlderMusicGeek

Your Turn: Bender Bending Rodriguez

From Futurama, created by Matt Groening
Nominated by Travis Larchuck

The short-lived and then revived animated program Futurama features a futuristic New York populated by aliens and mutants. So it's ironic that the most human character on the show is a robot by the name of Bender Bending Rodriguez.

Bender was designed only to bend steel rods, but he would much rather sit on the couch and watch TV all day. He fuels himself by drinking beer. He swears. He's addicted to gambling and pornography (which consists of computer circuitry diagrams). He dreams of becoming a master chef, taking over the world and killing all humans. Who among us can't identify with those urges?

Despite his flaws, Bender has a heart. He stays true to his best friend, Fry. And when he is accidentally launched into space and gets to meet God, the lesson he learns ("you can't count on God for jack") is something we can all use.

Al Gore is cool to me because he appeared in Futurama not just once! But twice! And once when he was still vice-president!

Admittedly, his daughter was a writer on
Futurama, but still...

Music That I've Enjoyed Recently

My Internet Radio Stations

This is a fairly good sampling of some of the music I listen to. It's missing a few genres I like - such as cajun. I'll work on that later. But it does contain most of my favorite artists. I tried to steer away from the better known songs to give you a better idea of what kind of music the artists play, but I was limited by the songs the website - Project Playlist - had available. But if you want to get an idea of what I listen to, just hit the play or arrow button. - OlderMusicGeek

The internet station that does the best of playing my music is Last.fm. Here's my station if you're interested.

This website, OlderMusicGeek Radio on Pandora.com, does a fairly decent job of playing what I like, although they do occasionally play stuff I don't care for, but overall they're pretty good.
